Meyler Campbell Annual Lecture 2024

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic - psychologist, entrepreneur, and author - will join us for the Meyler Campbell Annual Lecture this November 2024.

Ahead of the upcoming Annual Lecture on 21st November, Meyler Campbell Faculty Member Sarah Martin recently sat down with Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic to discuss more about what to expect from attending the lecture. During this 20-minute discussion, they spoke about what prompted Tomas to start his research into the rise of incompetent male leaders, why confidence often masquerades as competence, his thoughts on the role of coaching in tackling this phenonmenom, what coaches should be aware of when working with an incompetent leader as a client, and what attendees can explore for themselves before the lecture.

Tomas uses science and technology to help organisations predict human performance and has written ten books and over 150 scientific papers on the psychology of talent, leadership, innovation, and AI. In this lecture, Tomas will be sharing his research into the question: why do so many incompetent men become leaders? And will be offering his insights into how to fix it.

So, why do so many incompetent men become leaders? This is the question that Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic has been asking for over a decade.  Through his research, Tomas has delved deep into the why's behind the under-representation of women in leadership positions. He sheds light on the phenomenon where confidence often masquerades as competence and offers invaluable insights into how we can improve our systems and processes to ensure that the most capable individuals ascend to leadership roles.

In his book - Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders? (And How to Fix It) - Tomas says, “Elevating the standards of leadership – not simply having more women in charge – should be the top priority”.  Coaches are in a privileged position to be able to directly access and help drive this change with their clients and organisations. But how can this be achieved?

During his lecture, Tomas will:

  • Explain why the best gender diversity intervention is to focus on talent, rather than gender.
  • Highlight the human inability, and the AI advantage, to focus on potential while ignoring gender.
  • Illustrate why ‘lean-in’ is an irrational and counterproductive idea (even if well-intended).
  • And show that, in a meritocratic world, we would need affirmative action, positive discrimination and quotas to help more men get to leadership roles.

Join us this November with Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic as he uncovers the intriguing dynamics of leadership and gender disparity. Don't miss the opportunity to gain invaluable insights and be part of the solution to elevate leadership standards.
